these days i'm totally into rock&roll fashion.
highlights:
sharp colors and stripes
the beatles haircuts. so british and cool. i noticed a small process of reinvention on bucharest streets...which is enchanting.
fringed clothing items. they may look old-fashioned...but it's certainly their point. without the right attitude it just looks ridiculous
the rolling stones symbol. go for a vintage t-shirt and wear it 10 days in a row. don't forget to shower. and DO NOT confound it with the Kiss FM symbol. they just lack imagination!

So we have mesh, see-throughs, leather, Chanel bags and theatrical make-up. All in...but what about the lingerie-fetish trend? Luxirare seems to have no problem in creating a "second skin" and calling it wearable, Marc Jacobs played a little with bold, refreshing bras while Sienna Miller turned her underwear into a striking piece of outwear...

The blogs are pouring with notes from NY Fashion Week and the latest shows kept everybody searching for the perfect collection. Some appreciated the clean shapes and neutral colors and others suggested that after a season of mourning over the global recession, it's time for a fresh beggining. So I started browsing through the latest shows and found out that:

- i don't like Alexander Wang's collection; I think I expected an edgy urban twist to his style but instead he proclaimed the gym class outfit as the new IT. In school, I hated the sweat ensembles we had to wear on gym classes. I still may be under that terror. ( Adidas doesn't count as sweat outfit. It's way ahead.)

- i like Anna Sui optimistic floral patterns, mixed with checked tailored jackets and high waist pants. Cool, but not over the top.

- i like BCBG Max Azria show; it's like the clothes were reconstructed in order to reflect the eclectic fashion period we live in. I also dig the switch from sheer fabrics to mate ones, the drapped dresses and the fade-out patterns.

- i don't like Calvin Klein's collection. Francisco Costa played it too safe. He tamed down the architectural shapes he used last spring and offered a series of neutral pieces in color and shape alike.

- i like Jill Stuart's collection. Yes, she could have used a bit MORE fabric (because her dresses look decent only on extremely thin girls) but I have to say her sequined frock, the metalic dresses and the play between mesh, sheer and opaque graphics mesmerized me. At least it's SOMEthing new.

- i like Julien MacDonald's show. We should all know that before Balmain, there was Julien MacDonald. And now, in the sporty trend he defenitely wins over Wang. At least to me. The body fitted dresses, the sporty fabrics combined with the female body glamour, and of course the smart insert of tailored trench and messy sexy dresses. The whole "I need to buy" list. Smart and practical but not that surprising.

- I like the continuous trip that Furstenberg makes, staying true to her feminine maxi dresses. Her new collection explores oriental themes as well as hippie elements.

- i like the royal touch that Marc Jacobs brings with his arty-ruffles in the new collection.

As Ovidiu Buta said in his fashionandbeauty.ro editorial, we should wait for the visionaires in Paris and London fashion weeks.

She is an iconic photographer and the one who discovered Kate Moss. The author Fred Vermorel mentions in his book that when Corinne asked Kate to undress in front of the camera, Kate just started to cry. But those photos were the ones to unveil her uniqueness and got her on the top of the world. Now, Corinne is struggling with cancer and her friends started a project to raise money in order to save Day's life.

Anna Wintour initiated a plan to bring customers back in stores and to revive the world of fashion. Sounds like a Sisif's work, but hey! Anna Wintour knows it better. AND she has that list. Models, photographers, designers...who promised her they'll follow her whenever she decides to quit Vogue. Leaving the funny part aside, why would she? Suporting the fashion industry is quite a marvelous job. Anyway, retailers all over the world celebrate the world of fashion today, september 10th 2009, keeping the doors open until late. There will be shows, contests, product launching, limited edition shoes, musical performances, barbeques and many celebrities. The second largest industry in New York city, fashion will be boosted for sure. And I bet many Cristal bootles will be spilt on the streets-stores of Manhattan, leaving ladies with loaded credit cards very dizzy.
However, Fashion's Night Out is in fact the smartest plan to heal the fashion world. With all the vintage-mania out there, no wonder Jimmy Choo boots remain silent on dusty shelves. And as Vera Wang says, "if people don’t shop, people lose their jobs". That's for certain.

She rushed outside while he was still sitting at the kitchen table. It was raining heavily and her shoes were colliding with the wet concrete. Her dark eyeliner turned into small little lines on her eyelid. But there was no time for this. She hurried to join a beautiful night full of smoke and sinuous alleys. There were 3 more blocks until she reached the club and she just couldn't forget the scene in the bathroom. There were bloody beasts everywere. And he...he just stood there with a razor in his hand, leaning against the wall and laughing in her face. She was glad to leave the house and just forget. It was better when she got the illusion of control.

master and slave

I just bumped into this Numero september editorial, maybe ironically entitled "Best friends". In my opinion this is rather a master-slave relationship. It also reminded me of a controversed Gisele Bundchen editorial. Well,

1. fact: the most powerful states control the media and therefore the images that are most probably delivered throughout the world (including fashion magazines) represent the european and american stereotypes. It's in fact a matter of cultural symbols.

2. fact: black and asian models tend to approach the western standard of beauty (we've already seen tons of skinny black models with straight hair or asian models with blonde hair). basically, beautiful means being tall, incredibly skinny -definitely skinnier than 50 years ago- preferably with long, sun-kissed smooth hair, perfect teeth, perfectly waxed and so on. for more details, search for the following authors: Christina Baker, 2005; Roxanne Hovland, Carolynn McMahan, Guiohk Lee, Jang-Sun Hwang, Juran Kim, 2005; Tiffany J. 3. fact: maintaining this beauty ierarchy leads to a recognized ierarchy between races. the prejudices and stereotypes existing in the society are very well reflected in the media; it's like a vicious circle- the moment we see these images we accept, unconsciously, the ierarchy (the dominance of white beauty and white race). and we perpetuate it. and can never escape it.

And last, but not least, have you seen Beyonce's ad for L'Oreal? She looks white. I mean her hair has a lighter tone. And her skin also. And yes, she looks white.

Resort 2010

The resort collections are often the best way for a designer to express his vision to the fullest, to introduce a theme or a subject that are not so "appropriate" for pret a porter, yet they're not couture.
However, it seems like there's a battle over colours, patterns and fabrics; the various, the better, while the shapes remain clean and simple as they were in the 50s or rather sculptural, futuristic.
Most collections have some common elements: lace, printed silk, mesh and velvet, draped fluid gowns, nautical stripes and dots, jumpsuits, harem pants and delicious tailored jackets.
Simple cuts and neutral colours. As seen at Akris and Phillip Lim. I especially liked Lim's comfortable ensembles and the constant switch from the classic, rigid cuts to the feminine, draped dresses.
Loads of colour, floral prints and silk. Alexander McQueen's collection starts with office suits and dresses dipped in cotton candy and paint. Ricardo Tisci at Givenchy also imagined see-through printed dresses, pointing out a bold coin-necklace. Light, floral dresses are to bee seen also at Chanel and Balenciaga.
Sculptural shapes. Balenciaga played as usual with architectonic volumes, revealing Victorian-like ruffled collars, while Alexander McQueen showed off rigid forms that overshadowed the human body.
Velvet and lace. At Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld introduces us in a complete, round universe with swimsuits hidden in dark velvet capes which remind me of medieval priests; everything was topped by pirate-shaped hats followed by innocent lace dresses with nautical hints, tulle and mesh. Dior takes us back to the 50s with loads of lace and pearls, along with leather skirts, pleats, and dots, all covered by a smooth shade of lilac. Stella McCartney designed a stunning lace jumpsuit and a daring, glittery jacket. Phillip Lim also impressed with pure, dragged-out-of-past lace dresses.
Tropical holidays. With Acapulco as a source of inspiration, Alber Elbaz staged for Lanvin a show with holiday jumpsuits, sneakers, flowers and coloured hats. He also used sequins, grunge influences and accents of green, red and turquoise. Marc Jacobs followed the trend using a parrot which appeared obsessively throughout the collection.
Now you just have to pack and go. Lose yourself in harem pants, lace, mesh and tulle, delicate silk dresses, cropped suits, leather and velvet and everything will be ok. And don't forget the sunscreen.

Even though this post is totally off-topic, I would like to "publicly" write down some of the things that made simona one of my best friends.

- she doesn't ask questions like "why do you do that??". that's what acceptance is about.
- on the other hand, her pieces of advice are always well argumented.
- she knows how to bring the sun on my street with a phone call.
- she listens with her eyes glowing. and that happens with her closest friends only.
- we like to spend an entire day eating chinese food and watching audrey hepburn movies. during breaks we pick the crumbles on the bed like children and giggle while sharing our plans for the future.
- she knows how to stand her ground
- she makes 50s skirts and oversized sunglasses look fantastic. not the other way round.
- she knows exactly what's the best part of me, even when I forget it.
- she enjoys marry-go-rounds and waffles on a hot day and never complains about the fact that her feet are blistered.
- when she feels lost she needs a friend, not a designer's boutique adress.
- we found out what's the meaning of having a McFlurry while listening to Blondie, driving out of town.
- we manage to find each other at a table or on the dancefloor on "alcohol/El Comandante/Fire/Expirat/B52 nights", laughing like crazy about the same thing. and no, we don't even need to mention the thing, because we already know it.
- she drinks tequilla and Lipton Lemon Ice Tea with the same enthusiasm.
- she matches her earrings with the flowers on her sandals and resembles a butterfly.
- she understands what "different point of view" means. this is a very rare quality nowadays.
- she literally gets involved in a situation when needed, and literally helps me. just like old school friendships. a friend in need is a friend indeed.
- because I can tell it's something real by the way she surprises me with things I truly care about.

The swinging '60 and '70 fashion will always be linked to some girls that waited quietly backstage for their superstar boyfriends. Or maybe not. Or maybe they were right in the spotlight, living their lives to the fullest, having the nerve to stand up to rock idols that dizzy crowds adored. Rock and Roll brides and girlfriends certainly turned themselves into icons.
Pamela Courson Morrison (December 22, 1946 - April 25, 1974) was Jim Morrison's (The Doors) cosmic mate, and together reigned as the regal reptile and his faerie queen (Mark Ebner). He dedicated his self-published poetry books to her as well as some of their songs - Love street, Queen of the highway,etc. Described as having an innate sense of style, Pamela ran a very expensive fashion boutique called Themis, financed by Jim. She would travel to Europe and Africa to get the most unusual and exotic merchandise, the highest quality fabrics and lavishing textures, designing exclusive clothes for the fashionable rock scene. She planned to take with her a "silver mini, silk paisley suit and hat, Indian suit, moccasins, feather fringe, hair beads" (Angels Dance and Angels Die, Patricia Butler) on one of their trips. She always dressed in vogue and moreover, she would often wear fashion-forward items, as one of her acquaintance recalls: " Pamela at a social event - she would stop the party! people would look at her because she was wearing the type of clothing that nobody else would dare to."
Anita Pallenberg (born 25 January 1944), also "known" as the 6th Rolling Stone, had a long term relationship with Keith Richards, probably the most talented, deep and intelligent band member. She speaks fluently four languages and studied graphic design. Model and actress, she had a some kind of earthy glamour in the way she dressed, generating the gypsy rock'n'roll look, mixing antique clothing and short tunics with large hats, low-waist belts, scarves and hand-made boots. She is quite the quintessential rock'n'roll babe, adventurous to the bone yet having an undeniable sense of style, powered by her unique italian glamour. Her personal view on fashion "set" the words used nowadays as to describe the term "boho style". Sweet Anita, You got the silver!
Marianne Faithfull (born 29 December 1946) is not that much linked to the fashion world per se, as to the music world; her carreer spans over four decades, her innocent voice from the beggining, singing As tears go by turned into a sorrowful one, marked by the long period of drug addiction and a lifetime of smoking. She divorced John Dunbar to live with Mick Jagger, the Stone whom she considered to be "the best bet". She can be considered a perfect rebel: dissing conventions for a life lived by her own rules - she hit rock bottom once, living on the streets, "very high and very anorexic", but recovered as a phoenix. She is definitely considered a 60s beauty icon: full lips and long lashes, wearing painted velvet mini skirts and fur coats, oversized sunglasses and tons of attitude. She and Anita remained great friends after their separation from the Rolling Stones.
Exiled in the land of fame and changing so many people's lives in such different ways, I wonder if the blessed can ever turn into the damned?

feeling alright?

Yesterday I just ended (hopefully) what I call a series of unfortunate events, topped by a minor car crash. So I decided to make the best day out of today, thinking and reading about eye-pleasing items.
First, i would like to have the most perfect breakfast: peanut butter with banana slices, grapes and cereals. I would watch Garfield, my cat, chasing butterflies in golden sunlights. Afterwards, I would check my To Do list written in an unsual shaped, hand-made notebook. Then, i would put on Manolo Blahnik's The Campari, also known as Carrie Bradshaw's urban myth, the Mary Jane's. I would spend the evening browsing through the wonderful paintings on youngatarts, spending more than 5 minutes on each art piece made by Alexandra Ecobici. I would drink a glass of red wine and fall asleep thinking of Elsa Schiaparelli's avant-garde hats. This way, I would break the night into day.

la boheme - the beggining

Today, the term boho chic is usually used to describe a certain style: loose floral dresses accesorized with waist-belts, head-scarves, dirty leather boots, furs and gipsy-hats, long silver necklaces and body-cross bags. However, the definition of this style has its roots in the parisian bohemian lifestyle back in the 19th century.
The parisian young artists had several things in common: they disagreed the bourgeois lifestyle and rejected all material values; they didn't have a steady home and they lived only for their art. I guess this was the period when being idle was a true distinctive and valued characteristic in this counter-culture.
Writers, musicians and painters lived in glasses of wine, on drug beds, along with their muses, the so-called grisettes. During the day they worked on their art, while at night inspiration came in large amounts of alcohol.
Their fashion reflected their lives: messy, chaotic and defined by contrasts. They combined different textures and patterns, different materials, adopting a subversive attitude which completed a very special, emerging category: the young, carefree artists that turned their poverty into a statement and a lifestyle into a flourishing culture.

The wedding season is coming and I felt like searching for the cuttest gowns.
I couldn't resist not taking into consideration Vivienne Westwood's Gold Label Lily Gown, which Carrie Bradshaw wore so beautifully in SATC The Movie. No extra words needed.
The second dress is made by the ultimate wedding gowns designer, Vera Wang. It's the perfect choice for a slim figure, suggesting an ethereal presence, walking on thin air.
You can find the third and the fourth ones in Bien Savvy's boutique, a romanian fashion house where it's impossible not to find something perfect for your body type. I especially like the second dress because of the delicate embroidery reminding of long gone good times, and the first one for its greek-goddess allure,simple design and overwhelming elegance and purity.
If you're more of a fairy tale person just go for a chiffonne fantasy, designed by Oscar de la Renta.
Break all traditional rules and get into a grunge-inspired wedding dress designed by Alber Elbaz for Lanvin.
Nostalgic for the domestic 40s? Opt for an ultra-classy Carolina Herrera ensemble. Don't forget the fabulous veil-hat.
Last, but not least, i admired this asymmetrical one shoulder dress with tulle application, designed by David Fielden.

I wonder if extra-long boots (Prada, Emilio Pucci, Louis Vuitton) will be mass-produced in winter.
On the other hand, i'm pretty sure the funky hats (Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton, Anna Sui's Peter Pan feathered hats, Christian Dior, Diane von Furstenberg) will be more present in the streets. Besides, if Sasha Pivovarova manages to wear so perfectly a bun-ribbon head-band in H&M's fall ad campaign, we all do.

The Dolce & Gabbana fall collection resembled a glamourous 50s diva party; noble textures, body flattering dresses with accents on waist, fluid materials with black and white Marylin Monroe prints, sweet checked little nothings - skirts and bags, a little bit of animal print and dotted A-line skirts, all wrapped up in a Hollywood vixen drama. Practically, the italian duo spiced up in a perfect way (Marylin Monroe prints, dots, gloves worn as scarves) the newest trends (animal prints, checked materials, 50s silhouette, leather, opulent fur-coats,etc). I simply declare it one of the seasons' best collections.

A dutch designer with a strong predilection for nostalgic textures and craftsmanship. Appreciated by leading fashion journalists worldwide, he inherited his passion for design from his parents, art dealers.
His fourth couture collection, called "Check, Check Mate!" is in fact an adventure in embroided detailing, small ravishing flames from swarovsky crystals, as well as a trippy rollercoaster through different shapes.
I especially like the fact that he carefully creates a unique story for each piece of clothing and this kind of "technique" grabs you with both hands and simply puts a spell on you.

sienna miller covers GQ magazine, the UK september issue. I think she has a natural, glowing beauty. And of course that innate sense of style. She just mesmerized me in Factory Girl, playing Eddie Sedgwick. Even though she's been photoshoped for The September Issue of Vogue... I think it was an unnecessary action because it turned out to be a complete uninspired editorial.

Generally, kitsch defines an inferior copy of an original style (thing?). We all know the popular "adibas" sweaters and also the eye-killer "harrison" jacket. Anyway, kitsch is defined by low quality. Also, low quality products are generally...cheap. Many people tend to associate these two concepts, but not all cheap things are low quality. However, an interesting fact is how attitude can change a cheap look - how attitude converts low quality into cool. Well, can it be? Some may say kitsch does not exist anymore, at least in fashion. One can sport a kitschy outfit on purpose. And some of them manage to look quite..original? I can't really say. But I still got a problem with cheap looks. And I'll make a list of every thing that crosses my mind and fits my personal definition of cheap:
- glued soles (instead of sewed ones).
- shoes and accesories that leave glitter on your hands.
- aluminium earrings that hurt your ears
- too short and too tight "plastic" tops
- dirty white laquer purses
- overdried hair. for me, it looks cheap.
- pants that leave nothing to imagination- those pants 2 sizes smaller.
...

Every photo taken by Richard Avedon, one of the most influential fashion and portrait photographers of the late 20th century, captures soul drops from the subject. I don't see very often, in fashion pictorials, images that can be felt, heard, tasted and touched. His pictures recall a simphony of senses, and every person captured in them seems to be naked; their well-kept secrets are revealed and they find themselves in a brutal reality. Sadness, poverty and dignity in dispair, grace and humiliation, all felt simultaneously when watching a single picture.
Marylin Monroe, Ronald Reagan, Tony Blair, Audrey Hepburn, Samuel Beckett and ordinary people were left bleeding after a blitz of a camera took the hidden part of them and put it on a white, wide, revealing background.

This fall brings on catwalks dashing textures, velvet, embroideries, fur, massive accesories, croc skin, and metallic leather. All incrusted with expensive crystals and bold sequins. It's all about Luxury, sitting in the front row. Or maybe it's just an attempt to revive authenticity. Designers forgot about ordinary materials and bet on the things that last in time, things that are valued generation after another. And maybe in a recession time we all need to hang on to something relevant through its value.
My season's picks:
Alexander Wang's fringed dress and witch-hat. The dress for its versatility and punkish look and the hat for its remarkable shape - it really reminds me of the wicked witch from The Wizzard of Oz.
BCBG Max Azria's luscious leggins. Slippery and decadent.
Balmain kept it's last season flavor and pleased my heart with crystal incrusted party dresses. So flashy you won't need shoes.
Givenchy's embroided dress and feathered sandals. The embroided dress because it's a mix between a rock&roll design and the long lasting ornamental needlework. The sandals because they can put on a burlesque show on their own.
Westwood's drapped dress. Just because it covers the body in a fluid cocoon and follows it's shape.
Stella McCartney see-through dress. because it's the epitome of distinctive elegance. And because it's dangerously sexy.

The 80s brought acid washed jeans, high waist goodies, enormous shoulders and daring make-up. Also, neon colors, big hair do's, women power and Michael Jackson.
I'd choose the acid washed jeans. They hit the catwalk at Balmain's spring collection 2009 and the streets also.
I'd wear a pair of skinny acid washed with a white shirt and laced sandals at a small, chic terrace with a giant muffin on my plate. Another option would be sporting them with a loose cardigan and a statement t-shirt, at a friend's house watching The Breakfest Club. And I wouldn't forget my comfy Chuck's.
All i need to do is bleach my skinny pink jeans; wouldn't wear them otherwise.

Nicola Morgan is an award winning fashion designer who uses a special method for cutting the garments and joining fabrics together, without the need of sewing. There are one-piece clothes with futuristic, metalic details, all reminding me of Huxley's Brave New World. I'm not digging this "useful-rigid-architectural clothing" trend. Even though it's cool because it's a direction marked by fast-forward newness and countless possibilities.

If you search for a place where you can slow down, enjoy Van Gogh's paintings or just wander narrow streets while admiring ginger-bread houses, Amsterdam is the perfect choice. To do list:
- pack clothes that keep you warm. you never know when smoke turns to clouds.
- eat a giant pancake, filled with delicious black berry jam.
- stroll along the channels and then stop for a quick bite - french fries covered in mayonnaise.
- do the Kalverstraat shopping. And stop at all three H&Ms.
- visit Van Gogh's Museum and Madame Tussauds, after you get high legally. or you can get high afterwards and visit Artis, Amsterdam's zoo.
Make sure you spice your wardrobe up with a little help from the local vintage boutiques'. Also don't forget your umbrella or a coloured raincoat.
Last, but not least, enjoy the full cherry of the trip by socializing in the Red District neighbourhood. Play Virus Syndicate and float on green air.

I recently rediscovered William Borroughs' Naked Lunch and stumbled upon a simple, yet memorable theory. There are many kind of a addictions; some are addicted to sex, some are addicted to money, power, handbags, social recognition and yes, drugs. But locking up the King Pins' and "relevant" dealers won't solve the problem. The need is still in the streets, sneaking through backdoors and screaming behind closed windows. And as long as the ordinary junkie wants his shot, there will always be someone eager to please the addicted while filling up his pool with stained money.
"Somebody" should be concentrating on healing the naive consumers. But no one does. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when dirty money is so easy to make?

Russian Chanel bags

Chanel's fall 2009 Paris - Moscow bag collection can be described perfectly in one word: original. The russian spirit shines through military decorations, golden symbols and blood red wool. Moreover, there are also the-always-fabulous chained quilted bags made of calfskin and lambskin, adorned with the classical CC logo.
It's surprinsing how a bag with parisian heart evokes heavy russian winter nights, marvelous architectural details, and even Rusia's imperial tendencies captured in emblematic jewels.
Bonus: Lilly Allen has been chosen to represent Chanel's bags in Coco Cocoon fall 2009 ad campaign. Well, things are getting better: a british songbird, a parisian brand and Moscow themed capsule-collection.
I really like this better/glamorous side of globalization. Endless possibilities.

Grab some friends and visit London. Wake up in a bath of light and have a true English breakfeast, in a true English garden. Try on a Tophsop dress and a yellow fedora, with a pair of Alexander McQueen shoes. The evening might be chilly; make a personal warm-up on Bloody Mary's in a hooligan-studded pub. At midnight, explore London's rave scene and explosive clubs wearing a Topshop see-through dress, accesorized with a gas-mask or a key-necklace. Pay a tribute to Prodigy's country sporting an England flag cross-body bag.

It's almost natural for an ordinary person to associate the animal print with vulgarity. Seing 50 something wrinkled moms squeezing their boobs to fit into a latex animal print blouse might be a pretty disturbing vision. but animal prints can be delightful. they bring a touch of agressiveness to an outfit, without being kitch or "too much".

you don't have to bleach your hair or wait 30 years to have access to a resourceful print. just look how fabulous kate moss and other fashionistas like rumi look. and take a hint.

Maybe there are many of those who think andy warhol was an arrogant pseudo-artist. Altough his whitish impassive image freaks me out a little, I think he's one of the few who managed to capture the essence of consummerism and put it in colors and patterns. The flash-backs, the contrasts, the repetition and the uselessness of it all - maybe pop art.

I really enjoy the capsule-collection Andy Warhol for Pepe Jeans - it's almost impossible not to find something appealing. Wonderful Marylin faces, bananas, flowers, Campbell's soup and Eddie Sedgwick. What could you want more? Find them in baneasa Shopping City. Make sure that all buttons are well sewed; you might find them in Martini glasses.
